September 2020 Fertilizers

Fertilizers can be an intimidating thought for a lot of newbie and experienced plant folk alike. There are so many options out there with different strengths and purposes. Where’s a plant person to go when we’re unsure of what to feed our plants? Don’t worry dears, I’m here to help.

The first thing I want to cover is the “When to fertilize.” I like to fertilize my plants in the spring and fall. This allows proper time in between fertilizing to let your plants utilize what’s there. It also gives your plants a nice jump on the wonderful growing that takes place with the weather warming. The fall fertilizing will help keep your plant nice and happy through the cool months. Plants love to have some yummy food in their soil.

It is possible to have too much of a good thing when it comes to fertilizing. Over fertilizing can cause plants to become brown and crusty or even die altogether. If you feel like you’ve overdone it, try to flush the soil out or repot with new soil. You can dilute the old soil into a larger mixture to avoid waste.

Now that we know when we’re going to be fertilizing, what type of fertilizers work the best? I love Indoor Plant Fertilizer. You can find it on Amazon

They have a few specialized products for specific plants as well, but I’ve had wonderful success with this general formula on all of my indoor plants. Always check the container for mixing ratios. Each brand and formula is different, and those formulas can change from time to time.

I hope this helps you feel empowered to give your plants some extra food love this coming spring. I just can’t wait for the world to start blooming again. Please send me your wonderful before and after pictures of your fertilizing journey here.

Happy growing! I’ll be back next month to talk about propagating. A super fun way to expand your plant stash for free!
